Every cup of Bloom Hibiscus Tea begins with a story.
Not just a story of tea, but of people, land, opportunity, and the quiet power of agriculture to create meaningful change.
Bloom was born in the rolling hills of Ntchisi, Malawi, where fertile soil, seasonal rainfall, and dedicated farming communities come together to produce something truly special. What began as a small rural initiative has grown into a purpose-led journey rooted in sustainability, dignity, and hope.
At the heart of this journey is The Village People Project, a community-driven initiative that began in 2022 with a simple but powerful vision: to create sustainable opportunities for rural communities through agriculture.
From Humble Beginnings
Willie du Toit founded the Village People Project to support rural communities by helping create income-generating opportunities through responsible farming practices. Working alongside local families, the project focuses on more than just crops. It promotes regenerative agriculture, nutrition, environmental stewardship, and long-term community resilience.
In many rural communities, agriculture is more than a livelihood. It is a foundation for independence, food security, education, and future opportunity. By supporting farming methods that protect the land and strengthen local skills, The Village People Project helps create pathways for families to build more stable and self-reliant futures.
Today, women farmers involved in the project cultivate crops such as coffee, macadamia, and hibiscus using environmentally responsible methods. These crops are grown with care, patience, and respect for the natural environment.
From this journey, BLOOM Hibiscus Tea emerged.

The Birth of Bloom Hibiscus Tea
Bloom was created to share the beauty and quality of Malawian hibiscus with a wider audience while supporting the communities who grow and harvest it.
Made from organically grown Hibiscus sabdariffa cultivated in the fertile hills of Ntchisi, Bloom represents more than a vibrant herbal tea. It represents the hands that plant, tend, harvest, dry, sort, and prepare each calyx with care.
Each 50g pack of Bloom contains whole dried hibiscus blossoms, carefully harvested and naturally dried to preserve their deep ruby colour, tart refreshing flavour, and botanical character.
For us, hibiscus was the perfect crop to build a brand around. It is naturally caffeine free, beautifully bold in colour, and wonderfully versatile. It can be enjoyed hot as a soothing herbal infusion or chilled over ice as a refreshing daily drink.
But beyond the cup, it also carries a deeper story: one of rural women, sustainable farming, and the belief that small agricultural projects can grow into something far greater.
Grown With Nature, Not Against It
The process behind Bloom Hibiscus Tea begins long before the calyxes are harvested.
It begins with the rains.
In Ntchisi, hibiscus is grown as an intercrop alongside coffee, making use of the natural growing cycle and seasonal rainfall from December through May. Seeds collected from the previous year’s harvest are carefully sown at the beginning of the rainy season, allowing the plants to grow in harmony with the land.
The farming approach is simple: work with nature, not against it.
No synthetic fertilizers are applied, and no insecticides are used. Instead, the crop relies on the natural richness of the soil, biodiversity, and seasonal rainfall to support healthy plant growth.
This environmentally conscious approach helps protect the surrounding land while producing a clean, high-quality botanical ingredient.
As the rainy season progresses, the hibiscus plants flourish. By April, flowering is complete and the calyxes begin to develop. These are the vibrant red parts of the plant used to make hibiscus tea.
This is where patience, timing, and attention to detail become essential.
Harvested by Hand
Unlike large-scale commercial production, the hibiscus used for Bloom is harvested by hand.
Each calyx is selectively picked once it has reached the right stage of maturity. This careful approach helps ensure that only fully developed calyxes are chosen, preserving quality from the very beginning of the process.
Hand harvesting also reduces unnecessary damage to the plant material. Gentle handling helps minimize bruising and protects the natural integrity of the calyxes before drying.
This step is important because hibiscus is a delicate botanical. The final quality of the tea depends not only on how it is grown, but also on how carefully it is handled after harvest.

Slowly Dried to Preserve Quality
After harvesting, the calyxes are spread out on drying nets in shaded, well-ventilated areas.
This semi-sun drying process allows airflow to move naturally around the calyxes while protecting them from excessive heat and harsh direct sunlight. Over approximately ten days, the moisture level is gradually reduced to below 12 percent.
This slow drying method is one of the most important steps in the BLOOM process.
By drying the calyxes carefully and gradually, their rich ruby colour, natural tart flavour, and valuable plant compounds are better preserved. The result is a vibrant dried hibiscus that brews into a bold, refreshing infusion with a naturally deep red colour.
Once fully dried, the calyxes are sorted, packed, and prepared for market. Every step is designed to protect quality, purity, and freshness.

From Village Fields to Finished Pack
Once the hibiscus has been grown, harvested, dried, and sorted, it is packed into Bloom's 50g resealable pouches.
The finished product is simple, clean, and true to its origin: 100% whole dried hibiscus blossoms.
There are no artificial flavours, no colourants, and no unnecessary processing. Just carefully grown and dried hibiscus, ready to be brewed and enjoyed.
Each pack tells a story of land, rainfall, patient farming, skilled hands, and the communities behind the crop.
From seed to harvest, from drying net to finished pouch, Bloom is crafted to preserve the natural beauty of hibiscus while honouring the people who make it possible.
More Than a Tea
Bloom Hibiscus Tea is naturally caffeine free, beautifully tart, and refreshing hot or chilled. Its deep ruby colour makes every cup feel special, whether enjoyed as a morning ritual, an afternoon refreshment, or a chilled botanical drink on a warm day.
But Bloom is also about connection.
It connects the drinker to the hills of Ntchisi. It connects a simple cup of tea to rural farming communities. It connects everyday enjoyment to a wider vision of sustainable agriculture and opportunity.
By choosing Bloom, you are supporting a project rooted in rural empowerment, environmental responsibility, and the belief that quality products can carry meaningful stories.

A Celebration of Growth
The name Bloom reflects more than the hibiscus plant itself.
It reflects growth. It reflects possibility. It reflects what can happen when communities are supported, land is respected, and simple ideas are given the chance to flourish.
From the village to the world, Bloom is a celebration of nature’s process and the remarkable people behind every harvest.
This is our story.
And every cup is part of it.
